Making excuses not to exercise is one of the easiest things to do. Two women passionate about running want to motivate us to get off the couch.
“Not just running, but also strength training and getting my body back into shape so I could run again." A few months ago, Crystal Reyes wasn't able to hop on a treadmill and work out this easily. “A kid hit me going about 50 miles per hour from behind, rear-ended me. So, I couldn't run or anything. I had whiplash and hip and back issues."
Reyes was encouraged to get moving again by her friend Krista Palm. “Running has been something that has resonated with us very strongly. It has been a source of freedom, a source of healing, therapy. It has been a big deal to us."
Palm had her own demons to contend with. "I survived an abusive marriage and became a widow about 19 months ago. And I've been a runner my entire life, but running became something God gave me as a tool to significantly change my life."
They're at Lifetime Fitness in Omaha, taking advantage of free training, getting themselves ready for the gym's Commitment Day event, a 5K on New Year’s Day. “So people wouldn't have to feel like I'm going to start the new year doing this event and feel completely unprepared for it,” said trainer Sandy Bikus.
Even if it weren't for the free training, these women are dedicated to being prepared, not just for the race, but for the rest of their lives. “We are both survivors of difficult circumstances and so we don't want to follow the ways of the world,” said Palm. “We just want to testify that we are just getting out in the game of life and if you have the ability to get off the couch or get out of bed, you should do it."
