Surfside Club Re-modeling For Re-opening

A favorite Omaha riverfront hang out will be reopening after being closed for nearly two years.

The club was threatened by flood waters in 2011 but sustained little damage.

But the club did need some much needed attention.

“We let last year pass and we don't want to let this year get away from us.”

Mike Walker is a partner in the Surfside Club.

He says the four partners finally decided to remodel and re-open the popular river front spot this year.

“Everywhere I go, not a day goes by 'when are you guys going to do something' so here we are,” he said.

The partners were in a different place last year. The club had a lot of issues that needed to be addressed.

Walker didn't want to show off the inside just yet, he calls it a 'work in progress,' but judging by the piles of old building materials outside, work has been moving steadily forward.

“We've taken the fence down on the back and enhanced the view boat side.,” he said. “All the brush and this area will be cleaned out and dressed up, new picnic tables just a fresh new start.”

And a new feature.

The area behind the club will be a new marina. The intention is to attract new customers, boaters on the river.

“We're going to open it up to the boaters,” Walker said. “We want to provide an area where the boaters can tie off and be a part of the Surfside community.”

“It's kind of expensive. It silts in all the time so it's a maintenance issue but we've decided just to take on that expense. I’ll be working with the Corps of Engineers to make sure that we get proper permits and all that to do that.”

Walker says it will take a little time, but reopening the club should be a nice spot for river watchers to enjoy this summer.

Walker says the club plans a soft opening on May 1st and will open for good on May 3rd.

He invited us back in a few weeks for a sneak peek of the renovations inside.
