The Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is offering a thank you gift to the community with free admission this Sunday.
The Thank You is for making 2012 a record-breaking year in terms of attendance. An all-time high attendance was reached on October 26th, breaking the 1995 12-month record of 1,602,831. As of Wednesday, attendance stood at 1,614,843.
"We're hoping to reach 1.7-million by the end of the year," said Dennis Pate, CEO of the Henry Doorly Zoo. "The drought wasn’t good but it was good for us. There was very little rain on the weekends."
Interestingly enough, the previous high was from 1995 when the aquarium first opened. And the newly renovated aquarium helped set the new record this year.
The zoo says the terrific weather, the new Prehistoric Play Park and Fossil Dig Site and a new guest services building and extra parking all played a role in making 2012 a record-breaking year.
Gates will be open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
