The Nebraska Department of Education is now accepting grant applications for expanding its Summer Food Service Program.
The program provides meals and snacks to children at schools, churches, playgrounds and parks during school breaks. It was created to ensure that children in low-income areas can get meals when they don't have access to the school lunch or breakfast.
Funding for the grants to expand the program was approved by the Nebraska Legislature earlier this year. Under the measure, the state is using $140,000 in state funds to garner more than $2 million in federal money for the program.
