Police are investigating an "in-custody" death after a man shot himself in the middle of an Omaha street early Friday morning.
It happened at 33rd and Ernst at 1:26 a.m. A nearby police officer heard several gunshots and when he investigated he found a man walking westbound in the street. Police say the man refused to respond to the officer's directions and as the officer called for back-up, the man pulled a handgun and shot himself. He was 31 years old.
Since the man died in the presence of a police officer, by state law a grand jury will be called to investigate. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
