Street Resurfacing Projects Underway

Damara Carter had to make different plans while visiting her parents in the Field Club area.

"I'll probably have to go down 35th Street and go down to Center," she said.

Damara got snagged by the first major street re-surfacing project of the year on 36th Street between Center and Leavenworth.

She was a little taken by surprise.

"I didn't notice any detour signs when I was coming up until I saw the road closed there down on Poppleton and then I came up here and I was like, oh I guess I'll have to go around the other way so I didn't notice any signs maybe there some off of Center but on these side streets...I didn't see any," she said.

That's because these projects are usually quick hitting...crews come in and mill the surface from curb to curb, asphalt is laid and the street is quickly reopened.

Work began here Monday and should be finished no later than Friday.

Bryan Melvin was also interested in what was going on.

"Mostly just to make sure that it's consistent with the historic district, the look and the feel and that it doesn't undo some of the work that's been done in the neighborhood," he said.

Historic curbs were well cared for during the milling.

It's a subtle but important aspect of this neighborhood people living here want preserved.

And while the work is being done, there's another important asset of the community neighbors want drivers to be aware of.

"There's a lot of kids who are used to it being a kind of quieter street especially the side streets so they're probably not as used to the traffic and the adults may be so yeah...you worry a little bit," Melvin said.

"Take it easy, slow down and watch out for the kids."

Other major re-surfacing projects on the horizon include Maple Street from 63rd to 90th Street in both directions, North 30th Street starting at Binney and 14th to 20th Street on Cuming.

Those projects should cause lane-restrictions and not result in total road closings while the work is completed.
