More fireworks today between the mayor and the fire chief as Mayor Stothert explains why she wants department heads to speak with one voice.

Mayor Jean Stothert has made it clear that she's no fan of Mike McDonnell.

She issued a statement Wednesday that she's "provided Chief McDonnell with numerous, reasonable written requests and directives...and expects him to comply" when it comes to solving the budget problems within the department.

Stothert says the fire department has been over budget by $30-million over the past five years.

McDonnell has said in the past -- that the contract is responsible for the current problems -- and the then-Councilwoman Stothert helped negotiate it.

He's not allowed to talk now unless given permission from the mayor's staff.

Mayor Stothert says it’s important the administration speak with one voice during the budget process.
