Three suspects arrested in connection with the theft of an SUV that police confirm was the vehicle used in the drive-by shooting that killed 5-year-old Payton Benson each had their bond set at $1 million on Friday. It was also revealed in court Friday afternoon that police arrested two more men in the case on gun charges.
Twenty-two-year-old Adonus Moses, 20-year-old Vincent Hicks, and 18-year-old Jaylen Montgomery were picked up for allegedly receiving stolen property. The property is the SUV that police believe was used in the shooting death of Payton Benson.
The other two suspects have been identified as Kevin Peak and Shaun Murph, Jr. Both are accused of possession of a gun by a prohibited person. In addition, Murph was charged with possession of a stolen firearm. Judge McDermott set their bonds at $1-million each.
In court Friday, prosecutors said the gang unit spotted Peak leaving the La Quinta hotel. They found a handgun under the backseat, where he was sitting. When the gang unit went into the hotel room, they reported finding Shaun Murph with a gun that was reported stolen January 9. He was on probation for burglary.
The owner of the SUV told WOWT 6 News that it was stolen in December. She said she came home to find her house ransacked and the vehicle gone.
While the suspects are being held only for their connection to the vehicle, the SUV surfaced in the spotlight of the investigation of Wednesday's deadly shooting. Benson was killed when a stray bullet from the shooting found its way into her home and struck her as she finished eating breakfast.
As police started sifting through leads, they began to focus on an SUV that turned up in a surveillance photo. Police believe it was leaving the area of 45th and Bedford right after Payton was shot.
