Former Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey is heading into another week with no decision on whether he'll seek Nebraska's open Senate seat.
That has some wondering if he's waiting to see if Republican Gov. Dave Heineman will join the race.
Nebraska election law requires state office holders to file for election - even if it's for a different office - by Feb. 15 this year. Non-office holders, like Kerrey, have until March 1 to file.
Most think Heineman would be an easy winner if he ran for the Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Ben Nelson, but the governor has maintained that he won't run.
On January 16, reporter Brian Mastre asked just that question to the governor.
Brian: "If Kerrey runs, would that change your mind?"
Governor Heineman: "No it wouldn't...I can do more good for our state as governor. I'll listen, but I don't know what it will take to change my mind."
If Kerrey opts to join the race before Feb. 15, Heineman would have little time to consider changing his position.
Last week, Kerrey told Channel Six News that he's currently looking for a home in Omaha. However, he cautioned we shouldn't read anything into that
If Kerrey runs, he'll have to establish residency in Nebraska. He's lived in New York for the past 11-years.
