Stanton County Crash Victims Identified

The Stanton County Sheriff’s office has identified the victims of the Tuesday morning accident on Hwy 15 that left three dead.

The driver of an eastbound SUV was Elaine Schmid, 59, of Norfolk and the passenger in her vehicle was her husband David Schmid, 67, of Norfolk.

The driver of a northbound semi was Derek Wrase, 53, of Joice, Iowa. He was also killed.

The driver of a southbound semi, Brandon Wolf, 27, of Fremont, remained hospitalized at the Nebraska Medical Center on Thursday in critical condition.

The fiery crash happened just after 9 o’clock Tuesday morning at the intersection of Highways 15 and 32.

Witnesses say the SUV, driven by Elaine Schmid, ran a stop sign and struck one of the trucks which was then hit by the third vehicle. All three vehicles erupted in flames.

Witnesses say a roads department crew was at the intersection at the time of the crash replacing a stop sign.
