Squires Scribbles: Papio South Jr. Navy ROTC

Before every game, the all familiar national anthem is played by the band. But before every game at Papillion La-Vista South the Navy Jr. ROTC presents the colors.

“I almost always get goose bumps. It makes me so proud,” said Emily Nichols.

Nichols is the operations officer Nebraska only navy Jr. ROTC.

“There's nothing that makes me more proud then to stand there without nations colors and realize that I’m standing there representing our whole nation,” said Nichols.

“Half of these people are military returned or active so they get it,” said Jeff Nichols.

He is the Naval Science Instructor at Papio South. He says it’s an honor to teach about the Navy.

“To be able to instill the kids and have them experience that through the crowd, through competition is great,” said Nichols.

He says what happens before every game, the moments of silence and the music, honor everyone who have served our country.

“All the friends I’ve had over the years, friends I left over in combat zones, it does strike a good cord with me, knowing that these youngster will go on and have an idea of what it's all about,” said Nichols.

The Papillion La-Vista Jr. ROTC is the only Navy ROTC in the state of Nebraska. They have won several competitions in the last few years and had the opportunity to participate in several high profile events. You can catch them before all Papio South home games.
