Spotlight on Nutrition

Westside High School elevated the food pyramid to rock star status on Thursday. Who knew zucchini was a superstar?

Organizers set out to prove that rock and roll can help put a spotlight on the importance of healthy eating. Not to mention how easy it is to dish out.

There was plenty of free food to try. Chefs gave demonstrations on how to cook easy, healthy meals. A farmers market shared the stage.

Westside used the occasion to point out that healthy is a word that's found its way into school lunch planning and even the youngest kids are getting the message.

Remember the menu when you were in high school? Did you get things like roasted chicken, whole grain noodles, zuchini, yogurt, and milk? You got the mystery meat, didn't you. Times have changed.

Westside nutritionist Diane Zipay says getting kids used to these healthy foods is something that not only sets up a lifetime of good habits but keeps kids sharp in class.

“We believe that eating right and taking care of our bodies and taking care of our brain health goes a long way into how they achieve in school," Zipay said. "At the end of the day, what we're trying to do is make sure that the kids are learning and have the best capacity for learning.”

The events pushed into the evening with an assist from WOWT's Malorie Maddox in the role of emcee and the Food Evolution Show: Jump With Jill. Rock and Roll!
