Karen Western Elementary wrapped up a special Spelling Bee Friday that tested the spelling mettle of deaf and hard of hearing kids.
Twenty students took part.
After several rounds, three students remained and Evie Richart took home the top prize.
Educators say it's both a fun challenge for the children and a beautiful display of courage.
Educator Kendra Peitz said, “Just to see them grow, how they started kindergarten, you know, our winner today, Evie, she will grow up and it will be interesting to see how she changes, how she uses her sign, how she uses her voice and just variations. Each child uses their own their type of communication they wish to use and what they are most comfortable with."
Evie is the first girl to win the contest. She also gets the nod for best reaction to a spelling bee win.
We also want to extend congratulations to second place winner Ruby Pelster, third place winner Austin Luther and all the kids who took part.
