Speed Zapper: 49th & Dodge

A personal near miss got my attention in Dundee. After a car almost hit me while running I decided to grab the Speed Zapper and give the area near Dodge and 49th Street a closer look.

It's not surprising that the WOWT 6 News Speed Zapper caught people speeding along one of the busiest stretches of road. What was surprising is what it's like standing near the street, during the early morning hours. The cars whizzed by so quickly, I almost felt queasy standing near the bus stops.

A lot of cars were speeding, but after just several minutes we caught a handful going 10 miles per hour or more over.

The dangers are obvious to anyone who stands near the road, but statistics remind us how dangerous it is. The Center for Disease Control tracks pedestrian safety. The agency's website states that 4,280 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2010 alone.

Pedestrians can't count on drivers to take the matter into their own hands. The CDC offers several recommendations including wearing reflective clothing at night and walking on sidewalks, facing traffic when possible.
