Speed Zapper: Giles & 75th

More Video...

It was a school bus driver who turned to the WOWT 6 News Speed Zapper team looking for help this week.

The driver reported seeing speeders near Giles Road and 75th Street in La Vista. The area has a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour, but flashing lights warn that the speed limit drops to 15 miles per hour in the early morning hours. Hickory Hill Elementary School is just a few block away from the intersection.

We took the WOWT 6 News Speed Zapper to the area twice.

The first time our team tracked speeds, the 35 mile an hour limit was in place. Despite having snow and slippery conditions, the team found most people driving 40 miles an hour. The highest speed registered was 46 miles per hour, 11 miles per hour above the limit.

The second visit was during the morning commute, while children were walking to school. It took two minutes for the Speed Zapper team to catch two work trucks speeding.

A Millard Electric Company truck was clocked going 28 miles an hour in a 15 mile per hour zone. Moments later, an Eyman Plumbing truck was driving 27 miles per hour in the same location. The team took that information to both places of employment. A manager from Millard Electric Company called the driver of his truck immediately, a worker from Eyman Plumbing requested any license plate information we could find.

The highest speed caught during the early morning hours, however, was a personal vehicle. The Speed Zapper team tracked a woman driving 38 miles per hour while talking on her cell phone.

The same day this story aired on WOWT 6 News we got word that a La Vista Police officer was out tracking speeds in the same area.
