A cornfield fire was started Tuesday afternoon because a Sarpy County public works employee was welding, working on a bridge just to the south of Highway 6 in Sarpy County on Pflug Road and sparks ignited the grass in the ditch.
Then the ditch caught the rest of the field and burnt some of the crops, the damage stretches between Pflug Rd. and Highway 6.
The Gretna Fire Chief credited area farmers for quick action to help till and disc the field, which contained the flames and prevented them from spreading.
