Robert Rogers, 44, appeared in front of Judge John Huber at the jail court room Friday morning. He'll need to come up with $50,000 to get out.

Rogers was arrested Wednesday afternoon after being charged with manslaughter and vulnerable adult abuse.

His next court date is August 1. The court assigned him a public defender.

Rogers' brother, Richard Rodney Rogers attended the hearing but did not comment.

Just before he was arrested, Robert Rogers told Channel Six reporter Mike McKnight that his mother had died of natural causes. Investigators say she died of starvation and that he had a role in it.

The arrest affidavit states Connie Rogers, 66, was bedridden and covered with bed sores at the home on 49th and Pratt she shared with her son, Robert.

Court documents state an autopsy showed she died of severe pneumonia, malnutrition and possibly dehydration.

Rogers told officers in May his mother died in the living room and that he was her caregiver.

"She died in the living room -- watching a movie," Rogers told Channel Six News just moments before his arrest. "She was thin but she had been thin a long time. I’d get her burger king and McDonald's whatever she wanted...I wanted her to live.”

But the Douglas County attorney alleges Connie Rogers died in a messy bed unable to move. Don Kleine alleges Robert Rogers dressed his mother in clean clothes and then placed her body on the living room couch. "This person suffered very much at the end of her life and died as a result of that neglect."

Detectives added to the details in court documents stating the only food in the house was two cans in a cabinet and nothing in the refrigerator.

The coroner said her bed sores were so severe and widespread, they were even on her feet -- indicating she was too weak to even move her legs in bed.

Connie Rogers' driver's license read her weight as 140-pounds. At the time of her death May 27, 2011, she weighed 70 pounds.

Investigators say Robert Rogers called the mortuary first before being told to call 911.

Bank records indicate mother and son had a combined monthly income of $3,500. More than one-third of it came from Connie Rogers social security which was withdrawn as cash within days of being deposited according to detectives.

Documents also point out that there no record of applying or receiving any medicare benefits in Connie Rogers' name.

The county attorney says that even if she was difficult to take care of such as not wanting to eat as the son claims -- that's not a defense considering there are many avenues available to get help.
