Smart Phone Security

In this ever changing world new challenges and problems seem to crop up every day. One of the more far reaching is cyber security.

Now the smart phone in your hand may be targeted by some tech savvy criminals.

While the robots fight it out in the ring Megan and Maddie watch but they also stay in touch with the latest news from their friends. Without smart phones it would be impossible.

But neither girl has given much thought to smart phone security.

Maddie Goetzinger says, "I don't really think about it that much, if something goes wrong then I'll delete something but I don't really think about it."

Like her friend Maddie's mom, Megan's mother keeps an eye on what her daughter is doing online but it's Megan's brother who helps ensure her phone is safe.

Megan Adams says, "My brother does it for me, for my phone, on his computer, so I just do what he does. He's pretty techie so he knows what is going on."

Cyber security expert Jon Larsen says most problems start with the download of an unsanctioned app.

Jon Larsen says, "There has to be some exploit on your phone that allows that to happen and generally it is to get you to install something."

Larsen says one of the easiest ways to secure a phone is to lock it.
Unlocked phones allow anyone who finds it access to your personal information.

Other points of entry into our smart phones are the web sites we use to backup our phones. Larsen says to make sure we have strong password protection on those and not to share that information with anyone.
