Small Town Council Didn't Chicken Out

Louisville opens up to chickens. City ordinance states that no fowl are allowed unless permission is granted from the city council. Jesse Abbott and Brieanne Zaracki asked specific permission for chickens at 514 Vine Street.

The Cassgram reports The (pending) minutes of this month’s Louisville City Council meeting say several citizens provided council with their reasons for supporting the request: fun for kids, teaches responsibility, better than dogs, not loud, fresh eggs and it’s a learning experience.

Some opposition was received in writing before the meeting from citizens. Some feared it would open it up to everyone if chickens are allowed at one location. There were concerns that ducks, geese and turkeys would come next and there were concerns about possible smell in the summer months.

A motion to allow the chickens at 514 Vine Street passed 3 to 1: ayes – Petrzilka, Behrns, Jensen; nay – McClun. The motion was for five chickens, no roosters, that those responsible must retain good sanitation, and the permission must be renewed annually by May 1st.
