Slick Roads Cause Problems

Slick conditions overnight and early Christmas Eve morning caused a lot of problems around the metro area.

We received less than an inch of snow but sleet left a layer of ice under that snow.

And that led to issues.

Freezing rain started to hit the metro area around 9:00 Thursday night and with it came slick roads.

Snow plows were already out.

But one truck wasn't out for long before it was out of service.

A car rear ended a snowplow on Interstate 480 near the Martha Street exit.

Two people were hurt in the crash and taken to area hospitals.

As daylight came no relief from slick roads.

Mary Wiese of Papillion returned from a run to the grocery store and got an early present she didn't want --- a Papillion Sanitation truck.

The truck slid on ice, ran over a retaining wall and crushed a car in her driveway.

"I was gone just a couple of minutes and came home to the truck on the wall," she said. "I just couldn't believe what it looked like. It's fortunate that no one was in the car. It could have been worse. could have been a lot worse. Could have gone right into my house and Christmas Eve's here tonight with my family it could have been disaster. But fortunately no one was hurt and things can be replaced."

The car belongs to Mary's son's fiancé, Shawna Heimann.

"Neighbors heard it they said it sounded like a big boom but I didn't hear anything,"

This was the first new car Heimann has ever bought.

"I bought it in 2008...it's an '09...so I've had it for two years," she said. "Now it's totaled."

Many side streets are still slick and while it may look like it's smooth sailing with just a dusting of snow.

Drivers need to remember it's what's underneath that really counts.
