An investigation is underway after a human skull was found in a duffel bag on a rural road in Mills County on Monday.
A Mills County road worker found the bag and reported it to authorities.
The case has been turned over to the Iowa office of the State Medical Examiner. It will be some time before any definitive information will come out about the skull, according to investigators.
Investigators do believe the skull is old and not from any recent time.
It's funny the way things work sometimes, in Malvern Iowa for example, you get the sense that the evening rush is well, anything but. So a couple right turns and a county road later, there's a scene that played out earlier this week that has the mood changing.
A surprise find for a Mills County road worker, finding the duffel bag with a human skull inside near the intersection of 300th and Oman Ave. Now turned the scene over to investigators, but it stirred up quite a mystery in nearby Malvern.
Reporter asks, “It got around, traveled quick?” “Yeah, news travels fast, we live in a small town, yeah,” Tiffany Paulsen said.
R how things were supposed to move slow around here? A few of the small towners – as they say – said that wasn't the case when news broke of the human skull found nearby. A look inside Classic Cafe will tell you that.
“I don't know, it is still just disturbing to me that they found it in a duffel bag on the side of the road, that is probably I don't know, if it was of significant value, why was it just left on the side of the road,” Rebeka Synder said. Although what's now a typical “T” intersection where dirt meets gravel, to Synder's credit, it's hard to shake knowing that something so unusual was found here.
“You hear about people talking about their cattle and what is going on at home, not... what size of fish they caught, yeah what sized fish they caught. Not you know, hey a human skull on a side of a country road.”
