WOWT NBC Omaha again teamed up with Shred Safe for a FREE paper shredding event Wednesday that saw another huge turnout. The great response brought an early halt to the day.

We wrapped up the event just before 4 p.m. as the trucks strained to keep up with the load. It's important to note that all material received will remain under guard until it can be pushed through the shredders but no additional materials are being accepted.

All documents were accepted and shredded on-site in the Canfield's parking lot near South 84th Street and West Center Road at no charge.

“With HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) rules and with everything that is going with regard to security and destruction, I think it's a very important function of every household to have items they feel are secure are destroyed,” says Omaha Paper Stock Company CEO Bob Epstein.

These are the sorts of items that were accepted.

Last May, area residents shredded 35,600 pounds of paper, the equivalent of 1,780 boxes of paper or 17,800 reams. That's 8,900,000 individual pieces of paper collected and destroyed in our first, one-day shred event.

Shred Safe is a bonded and insured shredding company. Two security guards will be on site. This is one of the busiest days of year for Shred Safe, a business that's definitely not slowing down even as we become more dependent on digital files.

"People like the comfort of seeing and knowing their records and every once in a while they have to refer to them so consequently it's easier to refer to a piece of paper you have in a file then to look it up on the Internet,” says Epstein.

Once the truckloads leave the parking lot Wednesday evening, they'll be sold to a tissue mill and recycled into toilet paper.
