It's countdown to Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year is now just five days away. But some Omaha businesses are hoping to convince shoppers to skip the big retailers and shop locally.

Dianna Abbott is manager of The Bookworm near 90th and Pacific. The store is gearing up for Small Business Saturday. “It’s a great enticement at the very least for people to come out and see what's in their community that they honestly haven't taken time to look at."

Small Business Saturday falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday and helps give independently-owned businesses more exposure during the holiday shopping season. “This really helps to draw attention to the people who have put their heart and their life into opening businesses in Omaha.”

The holiday season is crucial to small businesses, which are still recovering from the slowdown in the economy. According to the National Federation of Independent Business, the number one problem facing businesses remains weak sales.

“Take a look around you, you're supporting your neighbor, you're supporting the person whose in church with you, you are supporting anyone who's taking their money and saying I'm putting it here.” Abbott says that money helps employ her staff, many of whom are educators and give local talent recognition.

“We’re all into this together and we are. We're a venue where people who are local writers, artists can get a voice and that happens.”

If you use an American Express card and spend $25 or more when shopping locally on Saturday, you can receive a $25 credit.
