A teenager remains hospitalized while four other teens are in police custody following a shooting and police chase Wednesday evening. The Omaha neighborhood where it happened is demanding an end to the violence.
When police arrived at 44th and Pinkney just after 6:30 p.m., they found 18-year-old Greg Bahati wounded. Officers spotted the suspects' vehicle at 24th and Sprague and pulled them over at 24th and Lake. All four ran from the scene, but were soon captured.
“We want to keep it out of our neighborhood, but our neighborhood just seems to catch the crossfire all the time,” says Brian Cook, who was caught in the crossfire. He says his home was struck by bullets after 19-year-old Ivery Smith and three 17-year-olds, two boys and a girl, allegedly opened fire in the drive-by shooting.
A few houses over, they allegedly wounded Bahati, who had just stepped outside. “I heard like eight shots,” says Cook. “I was just thinking it was like firecrackers or something, you know?”
Bahati suffered injuries not thought to be life threatening. The suspects were each charged with first-degree felony assault. Two also face theft charges as the vehicle used in the drive-by was stolen.
The neighborhood is up in arms because a lot of children play outside. “It's a shame when you can't let your kids go out and play without some type of harm being done to them or it being seen,” says Steve Johnson. "You know, sometimes seeing it is just as worse as it happening to you.”
