Gunfire set off a chain of events that ended with the evacuation of an Omaha apartment building Saturday morning.

Three men in an SUV heading westbound on Maple Street were shot at by a passenger in a gray car that pulled up alongside them around 2 a.m.

Twenty-three-year-old Stevens Cook and 25-year-old Justin Baker were wounded and as the SUV tried to get away it crashed into one of the buildings at the Maple Park Plaza apartments.

"I saw this kid laying on the ground and he was in bad shape and he was bleeding from the hip," said Vanessa Chase, a neighbor who called the police and waited with Baker until they arrived.

The apartments were evacuated until MUD could repair the gas leak. The residents are now back home except for one man who lived in a ground-level apartment. The damage to his wall was too severe so he's staying with a friend.

The victims' injuries were not life threatening.
