Omaha Police say a man who was shot early Monday morning has died of his injuries. They've identified him as 24-year-old Delayno Wright.
It happened just before 12:30 Monday morning in the area of 175 and Center. Police were called for a report of shots fired, but when they arrived, learned Wright was on his way to Lakeside Hospital in a private vehicle.
Witnesses at the scene say they heard six or seven shots.
The shooting happened about a block away from Halo Ultra Lounge, where an event was being held. "We had a large event, there was about 2,500 people here, great crowd, great event," said Chris Jones, owner of Halo bar.
He says that size of crowd is not uncommon for holiday events.
"We had everything protected here, I had police officers, over 25 security guards, there's only so much of a range I can protect," said Jones.
He said the violence is hitting too close to home, but it didn't happen on his bar's premises.
Wright, allegedly shot in the back, was transported from Lakeside Hospital to Nebraska Medical Center, where he died.
"There is only so much you can control, and we did everything we could inside, and everyone was protected," said Jones. "I feel like they had a fantastic time, but unfortunately our grasp and range can only go so far. It's terrible and unfortunate."
Police searched the area for clues, questioning witnesses, and studying evidence like a bullet hole in the window of an SUV.
At this time, police have not described any suspects.
For now, Jones' thoughts are with Wright's family. "My condolences go out to the victim, it's a tragedy."
