The Polk County Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident of excessive force by one of its officers, a four-legged officer named Dameon.

Deputies were chasing a vehicle in Des Moines Thursday night when the driver stopped and ran into a wooded area, prompting a deputy to release his dog to search for him. Instead of seeking the suspect, Dameon ran to a man standing beside a garage and bit his leg and arm.

Twenty-five-year-old Andrew Levy was treated at a hospital and released.

Dameon will not be in service during the investigation.
