Sex in the Sauna

You go there to work out but people are having sex inside Omaha health and fitness clubs.

Channel Six News Fact Finders found a post from November asking for sexual contact. It reads in part, “Looking to see if any members of Blue Moon on 108th and Q want to coordinate workout times... ideal for a straight, married guy to hit the gym and get what the wife/girlfriend hates to do.” The request went on to ask to perform oral sex.

Blue Moon Fitness Owner, Joel Potter tells Channel Six News he was made aware of the post and ones like it. Now, he’s trying to put a stop to it at his clubs.

The reasons people will hit the gym will vary. For some it's about building confidence and for others to burn off weight or stack on the muscle. Choosing the right club can make a big difference. “Just looking around you can see it just how happy people are to be here and they are doing it at their own pace, they are not trying to compare themselves to someone else,” Ben Novak said.

But what happens when the gym becomes a "hook up" spot? When people post to asking to meet up?

“My philosophy is I want to treat each member the way I would want my own mother treated if she was in a gym 500 miles away, dealing with strangers,” Potter said. Potter is about to open his third Blue Moon Fitness Center near 84th and West Center Road. He says it's not about who's doing it, it's about public sex being a public problem.

"What somebody does in their house that is their business but when they do it in my house, it becomes my business,” Potter said.

This sauna was used for sexual activity at the 108th & Maple Street location Potter said, that includes two hot tubes that were drained three weeks ago. When he found out the sexual activity was going back there, he said enough was enough.

Now, the space will be put to other use.

The 84th and Center Street club is set to open before years-end and part of the new design is controlling the layout of the building. "By having the tanning rooms up front we will be able to control how many people go into each booth,” Potter said.

When the West Center Street location does open, Potter wants his members to know he will not tolerate that type of activity in his clubs. "I'm looking to provide a wholesome environment where an average person feels comfortable,” Potter said.

Potter said he removed a $28,000 whirlpool at the Q Street location last year because it was abused and said various types of sexual activity is a problem affecting fitness clubs across the country.
