Storms Bring Rain, Hail, Lightning

Strong thunderstorms rumbled through the metro Friday night, bringing heavy rain and lightning.

The inclement weather forced the opening ceremonies of the College World Series to be cut short. More storms are possible overnight, but the intensity should lessen with each passing hour.

For those that are from out of town attending the College World Series Fan Fest, downtown Omaha and TD Ameritrade Park are located in Douglas County, Nebraska.

Some fans may be staying in hotels in some of the surrounding areas. If in the cities of Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista and Gretna, you are located in Sarpy County, Nebraska. If your hotel is in Council Bluffs, you are located in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for about 28 counties stretching from Spencer to the northeast corner of the state. A flood warning was issued Friday for the Cedar and Shell Rock rivers in areas including Cedar Falls, Waterloo and Shell Rock.

Some business owners in Greene are moving merchandise and equipment to higher ground. Greene River Days, the annual town festival scheduled for Friday and Saturday, is being held at the town's community center because the original location at Perrin Park is underwater.

Residents in low-lying Johnson County neighborhoods are being allowed to return to their homes after they were ordered to evacuate during flooding. The county lifted mandatory evacuation orders Friday afternoon for neighborhoods located south and north of Iowa City along the Iowa River.

MidAmerican Energy said thousands of customers have their power back following a strong thunderstorm Friday afternoon. About 500 customers remain without power, down from more than 3,000.
