There are 59 registered sex offenders living in a three mile radius of 140th and Center in Omaha. Within a mile, there are six. David burns lives in the area. He is aware of three of them.
He said he was aware of the sex offenders, because his neighbors were diligent. Other parents aren't so fortunate.
Recently, a seven-year-old girl told police that she was sexually assaulted by her neighbor, inside an apartment in the Midtown neighborhood. Harold Shipley was charged with sexual assault and enticement. He was convicted of sexual assault of a child 15 years ago, and was released in 2000.
"It's easy to trust people," said Burns. "I mean, we want to trust everyone in this world. It's really after the fact, we say, I wish I would have noticed the signs."
Burns says he isn't worried about the three sex offenders in his neighborhood, and he doesn't think other parents should be either. However, he does think that they should do their homework.
