The law required all businesses to report any transaction that totaled more than $600. The idea was that it would allow the government to more closely track business activity, and catch firms that tried to under report their tax liability.

Senator Johanns seven times introduced legislation to repeal that part of the law. Many supporters argued the provision was a job killer.

Today the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to go along with Johanns. On a vote of 87 to 12 the Senate approved a bill that had previously passed the House, so it now goes to President Obama for his signature.

Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson also voted to remove the business reporting requirement.
