The Mega Millions jackpot is the second-largest in history. The top prize for Friday's 10 p.m. drawing has increased to $425 million due to heavy sales.
It is the fifth-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history. Odds of winning are about 1 in 176 million. The cash option would be $228 million before taxes.
Forty-seven-year-old Scott Byerly of Ankeny, Iowa said he was "buying the tickets to daydream." Paula Otto, the Virginia Lottery's executive director and Mega Millions' lead director, says sales are 40 percent ahead of projections.
The largest Mega Millions jackpot, also the largest in American lottery history, was $656 million on March 30, 2012 split by winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.
