A San Mateo, California man believed to have disappeared from an Amtrak train somewhere between eastern Colorado and western Nebraska has been found dead in Haigler, Nebraska, close to the state border with Colorado and Kansas.
The body of 69-year-old Charlie Dowd was found by a railroad worker. It's not clear when the body was discovered, but the family was notified on Friday.
Dowd was last seen a week ago Thursday on a California-to-Chicago train. His luggage arrived in Chicago last Friday, but there was no sign of the retired firefighter.
His daughter, who came to Nebraska last Sunday to help with the search, said her father would become disoriented without his medication.
Jen Dowd said Amtrak told the family earlier this week that a passenger saw Dowd standing near a train door last Thursday night. Another passenger later found an exterior door ajar around 11 p.m.
