The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s office is warning employers of a potential scam. On the other end of a phone conversation is someone claiming to be law enforcement informing the business that an employee has been arrested.
The caller, who sounds legitimate, requests information about the employee or asks that the employer call them back right away. The caller informs the employer that deputies would be sent to make an arrest.
The sheriff’s office says this type of scam is an attempt to put pressure on employers to notify the victim, have the victim call the scammer back, and take care of whatever fines they supposedly have. Employers are advised not to give out any further information about their employees.
