Saving Money Living Eco-Friendly, Where Less Is More

Many believe that having more is better than having less, but one Omaha native is arguing just the opposite and she's living a lifestyle to prove it.

It's hard to imagine living without electricity or plumbing, but for Rachel Ferber, that's just what she's doing. “It's really important to us to live a life that's in alignment with our values." Her values are living as eco-friendly (environmentally friendly) as possible.

Ferber is originally from Omaha, but now lives in an “ecovillage” in northeast Missouri called "Dancing Rabbit." Sunday, she returned to her church in Omaha to teach others about how she lives. "We are living to show people what it's like to do it and that it can be done and it's actually really fun and healthy and a satisfying way of life."

Villagers live in smaller, eco-friendly homes. They've reduced their electricity and vehicle use by over 90 percent. “A key part of reducing consumption is sharing with other people.” They also live by the idea that less is more. “Buying less, that's a huge part of it, the waste that comes from buying more than you need and having more than you need.”

Most of us aren't ready to take the drastic step Ferber did, but she says there are lessons we can take from this. “You might not need to get rid of your car entirely, but drive it half as much, have another person in the car, share in your neighbor’s car."

Other advice includes looking into solar panel technology, insulating your home and doing the simple things like turning off power when you aren't using it. All can help save the environment and keep money in your pocket.

Ferber says because of the steps she's taken her family of three can live on around $5,000 a year at Dancing Rabbit. She's lived in the eco-village since April.
