Update: Sarah Danoff Pleads No Contest

Sarah Danoff now faces the maximum sentence in this case one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Family and community groups in the courtroom today, hope this case will be the example Nebraska lawmakers need to pass tighter restrictions and punishments for those who buy alcohol for minors.

Accompanied by her attorney, 28 year old Sarah Danoff leaves court, realizing the extent of the charges she faces.

Her defense attorney, Steve Delaney says, "This is something that has tore her up from day one, she knows through conversations with me, that they are looking at increasing the penalties with this offense."

But it's too late, according to Jessica Bedient's father, David, who spoke with City Prosecutor Marty Conboy before court this morning. David Lutton says, "We look at the young woman who provided the alcohol, who enabled Aaron Danoff to drive that night and killed our daughter, and that's where the penalty needs to be because she's really the cause of all this."

Conboy submitted video surveillance from the South Omaha grocery store where Sarah purchased the alcohol that Saturday night in October.

Aaron Danoff is seen with his friend, David Reckinger, strolling through the aisles of alcohol. They were never seen going through a check out lane. Sarah, Aaron and David were only in the store for 6 minutes and in that time Sarah Dan off purchased a 12 pack of Smirnoff ice, a 12 pack of bud light and a bottle of liquor. Aaron crashed into Jessica less than five hours later.

Marty Conboy says, "How could the legislature anticipate that something else that would be worse than this that would carry more than a year this is the worst, and should get the worst penalty."

Now there is a push is underway to change Nebraska law. Lutton says, "She should be held responsible just as he was, there should be consequences equal to what she did."

Danoff will be sentenced on June 30th. The bill being considered in the legislature has not passed. If it does the penalty for Danoff's crime would be increased to a maximum 5 years instead of one.
