College students are packing up and heading to the dorms, some for the first time. UNO campus officers want students to know that they can feel safe.
The excitement of starting college can be full of a lot of unknowns and one thing students don't want to worry about is where their valuables are at all times.
Campus security showed students where to write down serial numbers on electronics and other items if they were to be stolen. Campus security has been doing this for a few years. They not only help students log valuable items to help authorities track them down, but also let students know they're available 24 hours a day for things like personal escorts, safety checks and crime prevention.
"It ensures his safety," said Stacey Phillipson, mother of a UNO freshman. "It's always scary having your child away from you, not coming home every night, at least I know he's going to be safe here."
Megan Henderson is living in Scott Court this year after having a dorm on north campus last year. She says she already feels more at ease, though she remembers an armed robbery and carjacking that happened on the Dodge Street campus during the last school year.
"I think it's really good of them to show interest in students. I think because of events on north campus last year, some students don't feel as safe and it's good to know there's security around all the time."
Other residence halls will have students move in later this week. Classes start at UNO on August 20th.
