Friday's Rock ‘N Roll Up Your Sleeve blood drive in Omaha and Council Bluffs collected 320 pints of blood.
Someone somewhere in America needs blood every two seconds. Nearly 40 percent of the population can donate, but fewer than 10 percent actually do. More than 40,000 donations are needed every single day.
The blood supply is often in short supply this time of year with school out, vacations and people just busy enjoying the warm weather. "About 20 percent of the blood that the Red Cross collects during the school year is at high schools and colleges," says Red Cross Biomedical Field Marketing and Communications Programs Manager April Oppliger. "During summer our lifesaving connection with those younger donors declines and donations by that group drop by about 80 percent.”
WOWT 6 for the Heartland is proud to partner with the American Red Cross for the event.
