A series of holes along 144th Street in Omaha actually doesn't have anything to do with road construction itself. It’s part of an ongoing project to improve communication across the city.
Fiber optic lines are being installed along 144th and connection boxes will be installed in those square holes. While it is a private project, the city will have access to some of the strains. Those could be used for traffic signal communication.
The fiber optic line on 144th Street south of Dodge is expected to run all the way to Sarpy County.
