Riding Out The Storm, Workers Recall Taking Cover From Wayne Tornado

Workers at an electronic equipment company in Wayne Nebraska told WOWT 6 News Sunday they hid in their warehouse moments before the Tornado hit the town. Their building sits just yards away from the path of the tornado. They said they could not believe what they saw when they exited their building.

The damage from the tornado is estimated to be in the millions, and 15 injuries were reported. Several homes were destroyed, but the nearly 2 mile wide tornado managed to miss residential neighborhoods by about only a quarter of a mile.

“We heard the roof go, we heard the doors rip off, and glass exploding," said Judy Robertson. She, along with 14 other coworkers at Concord Components in Wayne hid out in the buildings bathrooms.

The owner of the building and company, Mike Surber, said, “The pressure ... it felt like my ears were going to implode – it was pretty scary"

“You just don't know what was gonna happen," He said.

“We all hugged each other and told each other we loved each other – and we started making phone calls to home," Robertson recalled.
“Most of us were holding onto each other and we were saying silent prayers."

the two said the worst of it lasted for only 15 seconds. But when they came out of the factory to see what happened, they realized the twister just missed them.

“Then we came out here and it was just unbelievable unbelievable," Surber explained.

“I broke down in tears and um um said wow...total destruction with the exception of us," said Robertson. “I was with the best group of people i could have been with and to be safe with well get through this somehow and stick together and work it out."
