Former University of Nebraska football player Richie Incognito was doing what his coaches asked him to when he verbally insulted teammate Jonathan Martin, according to a report in a Miami newspaper.
The Sun Sentinel says Dolphins coaches told Incognito to "toughen up" Martin after he missed voluntary workouts. The article points out that NFL coaches usually call upon team leaders to make sure everyone attends, but sources say Incognito crossed the line when he used racial slurs and threatened violence against Martin.
Martin left the team and is seeking counseling. Incognito has been suspended indefinitely, but has written "this will pass" in online responses to the situation.
