Volunteers from across the country are heading to the northeastern U.S. to help with hurricane relief efforts, including a dozen from the Red Cross Heartland Chapter in Omaha.

They were packing up supplies Wednesday before heading out. The volunteers will be deployed for at least two weeks, perhaps longer.

One said this is not the first time he has given his time. “This is about my fifth time,” said Douglas Dahl. “We never know what to expect at all, they're all different. Just do it day by day.”

Dahl and the others will begin by passing out food and supplies, though their duties could change. To begin, they are headed to New Jersey, but will go wherever the need is greatest.

"Thank you, that's all I can tell you, that's all you hear, glad you came, most of them can't believe you've come this far and they really can't believe you're volunteers, you're not getting paid, so it really amazes most of them."
