WOWT 6 News has learned that accused serial killer Dr. Anthony Garcia is in Lincoln today to be examined by psychiatrists at the Regional Center.
Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies transported Garcia to Lincoln today from the Douglas County Jail. It's unclear how long he will be there. Doctors in Lincoln will determine when Garcia is returned to Omaha.
Douglas County District Judge Duane Dougherty ordered the mental evaluation after a request from Garcia's attorneys on February 7.
At that hearing, Garcia lashed out at his attorneys – saying he doesn't trust them.
The court was expected to hear a number of motions regarding the case – but delayed those hearings so doctors could determine Anthony Garcia's competency.
Dr. Garcia of Terre Haute, Indiana, is charged in the 2008 Dundee murders of Thomas Hunter and Shirlee Sherman and the 2013 murders of Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife Mary.
Investigators allege he held a grudge against those in the Creighton University Pathology Department who dismissed him from the program more than a decade ago.
Garcia's attorneys from Chicago say the case is full of circumstantial evidence.
