Proposed Study Prompts Delay In Moving Tax Bills

A proposal to study Nebraska's tax system has prompted lawmakers to delay action on tax proposals.

The Revenue Committee won't advance bills that deal with changing tax policies until the state conducts a comprehensive study on taxes.

The committee has held more than 60 bills dealing with tax exemptions, property taxes and a wide-range of other tax issues.

Revenue Committee Chairman Senator Galen Hadley of Kearney says the tax panel will broadly review property, income and sales taxes rather than looking at specific bills.

Not all tax bills will be part of the study. Senators say pouring too many issues into one study wouldn't allow lawmakers to produce realistic tax recommendations by the end of the year, when the Legislature plans to issue a report on Nebraska tax policies.
