Not a shock to most parents, but the cost of sending children to their high school prom dances is getting higher and higher, according to a new study.
A VISA survey says prom-related spending will top $1,000 this year -- at $1,139 on average. That amount is up about six percent from last year, and a staggering 41 percent from 2011.
Breaking it down by location, families in the northwest U.S. will spend the most on prom. On average, prom costs about $1,500 for kids. Families in the midwest will spend the least, shelling out about $720 to send kids to the dance.
The survey also says single parents spend almost double what married ones will to ensure their child has a great prom experience.
