Prison Time For Sexual Assault

Prison time for child sexual assault.

A 33-year old sentenced on two Class IIIA Felony counts Owen Adams had pled no contest to two counts of sexual assault of a child. A Class 1B Felony count of first degree sexual assault of a child was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Adams, who was extradited back to Nebraska in June of this year from California, was named on arrest warrants last year after a lengthy Plattsmouth Police Department investigation. Owens was implicated in the sexual assaults of a then 8-year-old child and a then 10-year-old child when he lived in Plattsmouth in 2008. Owens has remained in Cass County Jail since his return to this state. His bond was $250,000.

The agreement on sentencing was that the prosecution and defense would jointly recommend that any prison sentences on each count be served consecutively (one after the other). Each conviction carried a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

The prosecution asked for the maximum on both counts. “This is one of the more serious crimes” that comes before a court, said Chief Deputy Cass County Attorney Colin Palm.

Mike Ziskey of the alternate public defender’s office asked that the judge not rule out probation. He said Adams could go back to California and suitable arrangements could be made to be on probation there.

Cass County District Court Judge Randall Rehmeier described what Adams did as “horrible conduct,” especially with one of the victims. Rehmeier sentenced Adams to the maximum of five years on one count and not less than three years and not more than five years on the other count. The sentences will be served consecutively in the Nebraska Department of Corrections. With credit for time already served, Rehmeier said it will be four years before Adams is eligible for parole.

Adams was required to register as a sex offender.
