Preparing The Vehicle For The Big Snow

With the bulk of the snow expected to be a problem for the afternoon rush Thursday, how prepared are you? And what about the vehicle?

Who knows what these streets will look like at this time Thursday. Melissa Acosta is probably like most of us. “No, I'm not ready, but my girls are ready. My daughters drive a car, they have blankets in their trunk, gloves, battery charger, but I myself do not."

We all should check inside our vehicles and out for a few things before the storm hits. Staying on the road is a good first step.

"Make sure the tire pressure is up and the tires themselves are in good shape,” Jim Champion of Charlie Graham Auto said. “It's a bit late in the game to get tires, but if they're not good, then you're going to be stuck."

Under the hood, check all belts and fluid levels, especially windshield washer levels and anti-freeze and don't forget those wiper blades. "Wiper blades are probably the most neglected part of your car and they're easy for people to just change on their own," Champion said.

A bag of sand in the trunk adds weight and possible traction should you get stuck. David Brown of Ace Hardware said there's more to add to the trunk while we’re at it. "Just stuff to help you out if you get stuck and there's no one there to help you out right away and survive for a little while."

Make sure there's a shovel in the trunk, extra gloves and hats, blankets, maybe a flashlight and batteries and don't forget water and some non-perishable foods.

"Nobody ever believes that they are going to get stuck,” Brown said. “It's always that last minute when you start to slide and then you end up in the ditch then you realize, I should have been more prepared."

Acosta got the message. "I probably need to do that for myself." Just in case.

It's also a good idea to top off the gas tank. If you're running with less than a half a tank of gas, that makes it easier for the gas line to freeze and could lead to your vehicle not starting.
