Preparing For Removing Snow…Finally

The sampling of snow we got Monday didn't require any action by city crews or private snow removers.

But they are gearing up for what lies ahead.

A stiff northern wind foreshadows what's coming our way... a significant snow event.

That's good news to Mike Meiers of Struyk Turf in Council Bluffs.

They're ready.

"Three trucks and a lot of shovels," he said.

The lawn care company got into the snow removal business a few years ago.

Their small garage warehouse is packed to the rafters with snow melt and fertilizer.

"We had to keep one of our vehicles outside because we had to pack everything in here," Meiers said. "A lot of snow coming so we'll be working all day and all night pushing snow so we're excited. We need this to get rid of some of this ice melt inventory."

It was a little different story for Troy Windels of CCD Enterprises. Troy's company is doing concrete work by the federal building and a lot of snow could bog that down.

"If it works out good, we'll be pushing snow Thursday and back to work Friday," he said.

Troy says this year snow removal is supplementary income.

"Yep, and thank God for this year it is,” he said with a laugh.

Troy said it’s been a tough year for snow removers.

“Yes, it has,” he said. “I've got a lot of friends who are dependant on the snow and they're hurting this year, so we've been fortunate that we have a pretty good project going on."

Meiers says that while snow is a hassle for most of us, it's a money maker many depend on.

"A lot of people don't like moving snow out of their driveways but it's nice for us," he said.

Windels said a heavy wet snow could cost his team more time and take a toll on snow moving equipment.
