A Lincoln man is charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl as police try to weed through a tangled series of events.
Twenty-eight-year-old Sean Phillips is accused of the sexual assault. The case came to light after he was hit by a car in an unrelated incident.
Here's how it began to unfold. Authorities were called to Branched Oak Lake on Wednesday to investigate an assault involving a motor vehicle.
Phillips had reportedly been involved in a fight at the lake with 22-year-old Justin Garman. Garman allegedly got into his car with 20-year-old Emily Young and tried to hit Phillips with the vehicle. He made three attempts to run him down and eventually hit him.
Phillips was not seriously hurt. He was taken to the hospital but quickly released.
In the course of sorting through what happened, investigators turned up information they say links Phillips to the sexual assault of a 14-year-old Lincoln runaway.
Authorities say the alleged sexual assault happened at Branched Oak Lake just before Phillips got into the altercation with Garman but investigators say there is nothing to suggest that the two incidents were related.
In addition, authorities believe that Phillips sexually assaulted the girl on Tuesday, May 20, at his home in Lincoln.
Phillips is a registered sex offender. He was convicted of Attempted First Degree Sexual Assault on August 29th, 2006 in Douglas County. He was released from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services on July 10th, 2012.
Phillips was arrested Friday morning for the sexual assaults earlier this week.
