While an Omaha police officer recovers from his injuries, investigators have been probing into what caused a driver to crash into his cruiser last Thursday.

Forty-six-year-old Omaha Police Officer Louis Tomsu was in his police cruiser that was parked behind vehicles involved in an earlier crash.

Police say the cruiser was facing west and blocking traffic with its rotating lights on just east of the 50th and L intersection when a westbound Tahoe collided with the rear of the cruiser and pushed it into a garbage truck involved in the earlier crash.

The force from the collision pinned Officer Tomsu in the cruiser and he had to be removed by Omaha Fire Department personnel.

Tomsu was injured and suffered broken ribs and a laceration to the back of his head.

The driver of the Tahoe, 39-year-old Michele Eshelman, was not hurt.

Police say it appears that Eshelman may have attempted to retrieve a phone charger from the floorboard shortly before the accident.
